Kate Davies has a well-deserved reputation for interesting and unusual patterns, all firmly rooted in the heritage of Scotland and taking inspiration from Britain’s most northerly isles. In Colours of Shetland, Kate shares her explorations of the wild and beautiful island landscapes through words, projects and stunning photography.
Each of the patterns in the book has its own story to tell, as the scenery and history of Shetland are incorporated into her designs. The ten original patterns that are included are interesting to make and a pleasure to wear, and all of the patterns have been created using 4 ply or fingering weight yarn.
Northmavine Hap A warm and cosy traditional hap or shawl, inspired by the rocks and water of the rugged landscape of Northmavine.
Northmavine Hoody A classic hoody with neat turned facings, inset pockets, and subtle stripes.
Puffin Mantle Designed in homage to the puffin. A stylish wrap with a modernist puffin-beak pattern.
Puffin Sweater A close-fitting yoked sweater with a puffin-beak pattern. Designed in homage to the puffin.
Scatness Tam A gorgeously coloured tam or hat inspired by Shetland’s South Mainland, and the petal-shaped walls of the dwellings in Old Scatness.
Scatness Tunic A neat, tunic cardigan with Fair Isle yoke, corrugated rib and fastening with buttons.
Stevenson Gauntlets Easy-to-knit gauntlets to keep your hands and wrists warm against the chill sea breezes. Wear with the nautical Stevenson Sweater, inspired by Shetland’s maritime heritage.
Ursula Cardigan With a colourwork bodice and neat set-in sleeves, and inspired by the hazy pinks and blues of Shetland’s luminous summer landscape the cardigan is knitted in the round. Team with the pretty Ursula Mittens to remind you of warmer days to come.
