Merino wool is renowned the world over for its incredibly soft feel, and in the last few years it’s become one of the most valued types of yarn in the entire crafts industry. But what is it about merino wool yarn that we all find so irresistible?

For starters, merino wool has always been associated with luxury. Several hundred years ago, it’s thought that it was worn exclusively by royalty and was seen as a symbol of status and refinery. Merino wool yarn has in fact only been manufactured commercially since the mid-20th century, when brands started to see its potential, and flock numbers of Merino sheep increased as a result. Nowadays, top brands such as Debbie Bliss, Rowan, Sublime and Drops are bringing merino yarn to the masses by creating desirable designs that be incorporated into all kinds of knitting patterns.

It’s often described as springy, and it’s most certainly lightweight. What’s surprising is that merino wool yarn is fairly easy to work with, so even relative beginners will be able to get to grips with it with a little practice. And, despite the fact that many luxurious wools have a reputation for being tricky to clean, many of the latest merino wools can be machine washed, making them suitable for regular-wear garments.
