Lovely pattern but unworkable

I wanted to make this for my grandson. I began and knitted the ribbing but when moving on to the actual pattern I found it unworkable. I cast on 162 stitches for the larger size but each row has 168 stitches. For the smaller size you are asked to cast on156 stitches I think it was. There are no different instructions given for each size and as I said, when you count the stitches in each row, there are 168. How are you supposed to knit this? I contacted Rico about it but they can’t seem to see that there’s a problem. I’ve wasted my money on this pattern.
